How can I reach Mount Kinabalu?

Kota Kinabalu – the international gateway to the rest of Sabah – has direct flights to and from the main capitals in the region, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Kaoshiung, Toyko, Seoul, Brunei and Manila.

From Kota Kinabalu, you can take a comfortable car or bus ride to the Kinabalu Park. There are regular buses plying this 83km . route. The buses leave at 7.30am and arrive at the Park Headquarter entrance about two hours later. The return trip to Kota Kinabalu is also vice-versa. Four-wheel drive vehicles, vans, coaches and helicopters are available for charter.

Nepenthes [Periuk Kera]

Twenty one species of Nepenthes have been recorded in Sarawak. They usually grow on poor, acid soils, deficient in nitrogen. They are carnivorous plants which trap insects in the pitchers to provide them with some of their nitrogen needs.

Nepenthes start as rosette plants and mature into tendril climbers. Some of the tendrils bears funnel-shaped pitchers. Different species have pitchers of different shapes and colours. Most of the species are terrestrial while some are epiphytic.

The most spectacular species is N. lowii where the pitcher has a narrow constriction half-way up. N. ampullaria, N. rafflesiana and N. gracilis are found by roadsides while N northiana is endemic to limestone. Other species are confined to swamp forest and montane forest.

Habitat: Locally occasional in peat swamp, kerangas, limestone, mixed dipterocarp forest, submontane and montane forests, from sea level to 2,700m above sea level.

Distribution: Throughout Sarawak but many species are site specific.

Note: Nepenthes are threatened because of their high horticultural value.

Tea Plantation – Cameron Highlands Malaysia

Cameron Highlands is the largest hill resort in Malaysia located at the northwestern edge of Pahang state, at an altitude of 6,001ft (1,829m) above sea-level. Cameron Highlands was named after the surveyor, William Cameron, who in 1885 discovered a plateau at 4,500 feet. At such a height the area enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures not higher than 20°C and rarely falling below 10°C. It was then recommended as a resort but it was not until 1925 that the present location was proposed as a hill resort, and developed.

Cameron Highlands is also popularly known as the “Green Bowl” of the country as it supplies large amount of local produce of vegetables to many major cities of Malaysia and Singapore. Tea and strawberries are also grown on the terraced slopes of the Cameron Highlands, and the area possesses notable rose gardens as well.

Cameron Highlands consists of a series of little townships which include Ringlet, Tanah Rata, and Brinchang. The best tourist amenities are sited in or around Tanah Rata but Brinchang is fast catching up with a number of new apartments and restaurants.

Come 2007, Malaysia will celebrate 50 years of independence. The month of August will be filled with a myriad of parades, cultural performances, street shows and carnivals to commemorate the country’s Independence or Merdeka Day on 31st August.

It was on 31st August 1957 when history was made as the Union Jack was lowered and the Malaysian flag hoisted, with the first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj leading the people in the famous shouts of Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! (Independence!)
